Popular FAQs About Puppy Training: Everything You Need to Know

Bringing a puppy into your home is exciting, but training them can be challenging. Whether you're a first-time dog owner or need a refresher, understanding the basics of puppy training can make the process smoother. To help you get started, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about puppy training.

1. When Should I Start Training My Puppy?

It’s best to start training as soon as you bring your puppy home, typically around 8 weeks old. Puppies are highly receptive during their early weeks, making it the perfect time to introduce basic commands, socialization, and house training.

Key Tips:
Focus on positive reinforcement (treats, praise, toys).
Keep training sessions short (5-10 minutes) to match your puppy’s attention span.

2. What Are the First Things to Teach My Puppy?

Begin with the essentials that ensure safety and good behavior. The first commands to teach your puppy include:

Sit
Stay
Come
Leave it

Additionally, house training and crate training are vital during the early weeks.

3. How Do I Potty Train My Puppy?

Consistency is key to successful potty training. Take your puppy outside:

First thing in the morning.
After meals or drinking water.
Before bedtime.
Every 1-2 hours throughout the day.

When your puppy successfully eliminates outside, reward them immediately with praise or a treat. Avoid punishing accidents; instead, clean up the area thoroughly to remove odors.

4. How Can I Stop My Puppy from Biting?

Puppy biting is normal as they explore their world and teethe, but it’s essential to teach them boundaries.

Steps to Address Biting:
Redirect biting to chew toys or teething rings.
If your puppy bites during play, let out a high-pitched “ouch” and stop interaction for a moment.
Avoid rough play that encourages biting.

5. How Do I Socialize My Puppy?

Socialization is crucial during the first 3-4 months of your puppy’s life. Introduce your puppy to various environments, people, and other dogs to help them feel confident and reduce future fears.

Ideas for Socialization:
Puppy classes.
Playdates with vaccinated dogs.
Visits to pet-friendly stores or parks.

6. What Should I Do If My Puppy Doesn’t Listen?

Puppies are still learning, so patience and consistency are essential. Use these tips to encourage better listening:

Train in a distraction-free environment.

Reward good behavior immediately

Repeat commands consistently and use a cheerful tone.

If your puppy continues to struggle, consider seeking help from a professional trainer.

7. Can I Train My Puppy Without Professional Help?

Yes, many puppy owners successfully train their pets at home. However, professional trainers or puppy classes can provide additional support, especially for specific behavior issues or advanced training.

8. How Long Does Puppy Training Take?

Puppy training is an ongoing process. While most puppies grasp basic commands within a few weeks, consistent reinforcement over months is crucial for long-term success.

9. Are There Specific Breeds That Are Easier to Train?

While some breeds are known for their trainability (e.g., Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies), every puppy is unique. Patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement are essential regardless of breed.

10. What Are Common Mistakes to Avoid in Puppy Training?

Inconsistent rules or commands.
Punishing your puppy for accidents or mistakes.
Expecting too much too soon.
Using negative reinforcement.

James Brooks has been around dogs all of his life and has always had a special connection with them. About 20 years ago he decided to take his passion for dogs and teach others how to work with their dogs and strengthen their bond and most importantly, keep dogs in their homes and reduce the number of dogs that are sent to the pound because they don’t listen. Many people in the area refer to James as the local “Dog Whisperer”.

James resides outside of the Cleveland/Clayton area with his wife and 2 children. They have 4 dogs and 2 cats of their own that have all been rescued from various local organizations. He is passionate about rescuing and works with many local organizations around the area to help the harder to place dogs become better trained in an effort to help them find a forever home.

James has been a life-long animal lover and has taught his children responsible pet ownership. He believes that pet-ownership is a lifelong commitment and that it is important to do as much as possible to try to salvage the relationship. James believes that at the core of many behavioral problems is a communication problem; the dog parents and the dog are just not speaking in the same way. With some patience and understanding, there are very few problems that cannot be overcome.

Over the years, James, has developed strong relationships with veterinarians and dog care facilities in the Triangle and has amassed resources to help you and your dog stay together and live happily ever after.

Professional Dog Trainer Reviews

Here are just a few examples of the 5 Star Experience of working with GrandPaw James!
“A hero for dogs and humans. When I got Bono, my supposed American Bulldog, from Craigslist, I realized that I didn’t know as much about dogs as I thought I did. He ate everything from books to my iPad. A friend of mine recommended James to me. I called him as a last effort before I tried to find Bono a new owner. What a difference in just ONE session. James retrained me. James is brilliant at training. He is brilliant at teaching owners and teacher their pets. Bono owes him easy life to James”

“Can't recommend Grandpaws K-9 enough! I have been to several dog trainers in the last few years, and have not had a trainer give the level of attention to my dog's issues like Grandpaw James. He works with you at your pace and follows up after sessions to make sure you're seeing results - and also offers free pack walks for his clients which have been a complete game-changer for my pup! Walking my dog is enjoyable again and I can't thank him and his team enough."

~ Kanoko Maeda

“Mr. Brooks has been very easy to work with. From our first consultation and to his board-and-train service to doggy daycare to simply boarding, our girl always seems excited to see him or visit his facility. (It doesn't hurt that she always seems to be just a more "trained" after every visit, either.) It's obvious he cares for all of his "clients" as though they're his own. Mr. Brooks has been the only boarder/daycare/trainer we've used -- we have no reason to look elsewhere."

~ Heather Dunn

“It has been our great pleasure to know James Brooks and we whole heartedly vouch for his personal character and work ethic. We have known James for more than 7 years after moving to Clayton and needing a dog trainer. We quickly became friends and have been in constant contact on a weekly basis. He has proven over the years to be a hardworking and trustworthy person in caring for our dogs and can always be counted on to be professional in his business dealings with us as well as being a valued friend.”
